Cutting trees to make charcoal (Bougarila, Mali), October 2021

The second job that people have during difficult periods is the cutting of trees in the bush to make wood to sell. We have seen that this practice is very useful to them because it allows them to get through these times. In addition, the trees grow again even if it takes a little time. The question we are asking is this: Will these tree cuts combat the drought or contribute to it?

Faced with this question, we felt it was necessary that after each tree cut, there should be a replacement, a reforestation, not necessarily of the exact number but of the minimum. For example, when someone cuts down 40 trees, he should plant at least 10 instead, even if he does not have enough strength. This could help to combat drought and the lack of rain during the winter.
